Demo Reel Breakdown

1.  "Hair for You" Thesis Opening Shot (0:04)

Our opening shot of our thesis film "Hair for You".

I was responsible for the lighting, layout, render, character shading & intial designs of the character and set. My teammates were repsonsible for all other aspects.

Tien Pham was responsible for the Lookdev and modelling of the sets.
Jihye Kim was responsible for the character model, rig and animation.

2. "Hair for You" - Confrontation Shot (0:16)

One of our shots from our film "Hair for You".

This is one of the climax's of our film where our two characters get into an argument, I wanted to create subtle lighting that showed a negative atmosphere without using colder colors such as blue. It was a challenge to find the right balance between light and dark and bring the heavy moody altogether with the lighting.

3. Japanese Sun Room - Personal Project (0:23)

I was inspired by this concept art I found and how much you could feel the warmth of the sunlight envelope the room and wanted to replicate it. This personal project was so fun, being my first project after thesis, it was fun to be able to take all that I've learnt and apply it outside of our film. No longer having access to Nuke was a challenge but it was fun to experiment and find "scrappy" solutions without Maya. Trying to get the glow come from the screen was challenging within maya but I found playing with emission and it's color along with the material of the plane helped to give more of the glow similar to the reference!

4. Still Life Lighting Exercise (0:29)

For this Lighting Project I wanted to challenge myself by basing off the lighting from a renaissance painting. I enjoy trying to combine both traditional art and 3D art in a way that seems seamless, so this was fun to work on! I chose Auguste Toulmouche's painting "The Hesitant Fiancee".

The model assets and textures were provided by Pixar. I was responsible for the set dressing and PBR shading of the grapes, as well as Lighting and Render.

6. "Aqui" Thesis Film (0:40)

I was honored to be able to assist my good friend and classmate on her Stop Motion/CG film "Aqui" in lighting a scene for her.

This shot is the ending shot where the character's world brightens after being lost in the dark. This was my first time matching lighting to real footage of a puppet and it was a fun experience and was not as challenging as I thought it would be. I wanted to have a soft volume light to emulate the "ray of light" her sister represents to the character.

5. Study Room Lighting Scene + Stylized Paintover (0:34)

Based off concept art by Maike Plenzke, I wanted to recreate his room and lighting into 3D and add my own personal touches to it too. I added the dog to balance and help lead the viewer's eye to the entire image. I wanted to combine my traditional art skills and went over the piece with different brush textures and colours in post on photoshop. It was very fun to experiment with this and combine two things I enjoyed doing together in 3D, It makes me want to continue exploring this style further in the future.
I was responsible for the lighting, set dressing, shading, compositing.

7. Realistic Interior Lighting Exercise (0:45)

A lighting exercise where I wanted to attempt more photorealistic lighting within an interior set.
The set was provided by our professor. I was responsible for lighting, shading, camera, and comp on photoshop.

8. "Hair for You" - Closing Shots (0:50)

Some closing shots from our film "Hair for You".

These shots are from the final conclusion of the film. I wanted the room to be a gradiation of yellows, orangfes, pinks and purples to create a sunset setting.
